In December 1929, Jawaharlal Nehru was elected President of the Indian National Congress during its annual session in Lahore, where the historic Purna Swaraj (complete independence) resolution was passed on December 19.
Nehru Park in Lahore's Krishan Nagar commemorates this pivotal moment when Nehru hoisted the Indian flag, declaring India's independence from British rule. The resolution was a response to Britain’s failure to fulfill its vague promise of dominion status in the Irwin Declaration. Frustrated by stalled negotiations, the Congress shifted to demand complete independence. This manifesto, condemning British exploitation, sparked a mass movement for freedom, culminating in the public declaration of independence on January 26, 1930, celebrated as India’s first Independence Day.
Although now in Pakistan, Nehru Park stands as a testament to this historic event, with its name remarkably unchanged for 94 years.
