An Archeological Mound in Shahdara

The course of the River Ravi is subject to change over time, and its banks have witnessed human settlements since prehistoric times. Today, the remnants of these settlements can still be observed in the form of mounds.

In the town of Shahdara, a railway line originating from Lahore Railway Station splits into three tracks. Along the track leading to Narowal, at a distance of two kilometers, one can find the remains of an ancient mound.

This mound stands approximately 25 feet higher than the surrounding area and spans a diameter of around 200 meters. It is situated on the edge of the railway line and underwent significant excavation and leveling during the construction of the railway in the British Era.

Currently, a graveyard occupies the summit of this mound, where traces of debris and pottery items can still be discovered scattered across the surface. Despite its intriguing historical significance, the exact age of this mound remains unknown.

Moving to the northwest of the river Ravi, in the ancient past, the Bagh Bacha River, a tributary of the Ravi, used to flow. Notably, the land situated between these two converging rivers is adorned with numerous ancient mounds, including the remarkable Bagh Bacha metropolises.
